Since its founding in 1908, the Department of Ophthalmology has benefited greatly from the generosity of grateful patients; faithful alumni, faculty, and staff; and humanitarian-minded citizens and service organizations.
Gifts of all kinds have been put to good use throughout the department in the clinics, research laboratories, and classrooms, helping the department increase medical knowledge and offer the best possible care to all in need.

How might my gift be used?
- Purchase research and vision-testing equipment
- Provide residents and fellows with travel stipends to present research papers

What are some actual gifts which have been given in the past?
- Optical Coherence Tomograph machine-state-of-the-art equipment used to analyze the retinal nerve fiber layer and used in the diagnosis and study of eye disease
- Letzter Professor of Ophthalmology-first endowed chair in the Department of Ophthalmology, held by Alon Harris, Ph.D.
- Spencer's Ophthalmic Pathology-a 4-volume ophthalmology textbook donated to the Ophthalmology Library Merrill Grayson Chair in Ophthalmology to support vision research in the Department
- Jay C. and Lucile L. Kahn Chair for Glaucoma Research and Education held by Louis B. Cantor, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology
What sort of donations might I make?
- Cash (cash, check, or online credit card). Checks should be made out to the Indiana University Foundation-School of Medicine, and addressed to P.O. Box 660245, Indianapolis, IN 46266-0245. On the check or in an accompanying note, please indicate the purpose of the gift.
